Event Description
Twin Bill with Antonio Sanchez and Migration & Kenny Werner TrioWith four Grammys on the mantle and after participating on more than a hundred CDs with jazz luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, and Joshua Redman, it is clear that Mexican-born Antonio Sanchez is one of the greatest drummers of his generation. He has also emerged latterly as a gifted composer. He composed and performed the solo percussion score for ‘Birdman or (the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)’, the 2015 “Best Picture” Oscar winner. Based out of New York since 1999, the hard-working Sanchez released a new album in 2014, Three Times Three, on which he anchors three different trios. Sanchez will appear at this year's TD JazzFest with his quartet Migration, which includes John Escreet piano, Matt Brewer bass and features Seamus Blake saxophone. The hard-hitting, versatile, and dazzlingly talented Sanchez will make some of this year’s most bold and powerful jazz.
“Complexity and dynamism come easily to Mr. Sanchez.” – New York Times
After putting on consistently stellar shows at several previous TD JazzFests, New York-based pianist Kenny Werner is always welcome in Victoria. The classically trained Werner is a master of improvised music, and with over two dozen albums as a leader and several times that as a sideman, few jazz artists can match his breadth of accomplishment. Although he has sovereign technique that combines power, intensity, and lyrical introspection, there is a spiritual quality to his playing that makes him a “complete” musician. It’s no wonder this keyboard master and gifted composer is a first-call collaborator with everyone from Archie Shepp and Dave Holland to Joe Lovano and the legendary Toots Thielemans. Ari Hoenig drums, Johannes Weidenmueller bass
“Werner has become one of our most literate and visceral pianists.” – JazzTimes
