Event Description
. Friday, April 18th I.M.U. presents PAINTED CITIES CD Release Party w/ special guests LEMMING DYNASTY, The WIND WHISTLES & The GENTLE INFIDELS @ The Railway Club, 579 Dunsmuir Street . Doors 9pm / $10PAINTED CITIES - In a time when most music feels repetitive and colourless, Painted Cities are dedicated to creating compelling, inventive songs. Formed in late 2006, they quickly realized they had found a magic chemistry and began writing songs immediately, developing a signature sound and sharing it with local audiences. Their infectious, danceable tunes have been heard at venues ranging from music festivals to all-ages community halls to the grittiest bars of downtown Vancouver. Painted Cities draw from a wide influence of musical styles, creating a unique dynamic of folk, funk, new age rock and jazz, with lyrics that often deal with heavier topics such as relationships, culture and politics. With so much already accomplished during their brief career, it is certain that Painted Cities will continue to create inspiring music at a time when it seems to be needed most.
The WIND WHISTLES are a Vancouver-based acoustic indie folk duo. Their just-released debut CD "Window Sills" is "a veritable jam session as the Wind Whistles invite various talents to sing along, compose and strum, resulting in a compilation of simple songs that sound like friends making music in somebody's basement. Scratch that: Friends making music in a rustic cabin, on an island, surrounded by wild deer and a wooded glen. When night falls, they all keep jamming, a melancholy ballad emerges here and there, and in the morning friendships are stronger and good prospers over evil... these are songs that tell stories-solid harmonies with a diversity that could only be achieved by having eighteen performers rally together on twelve tight tracks." [Katie Nanton, Discorder]
The GENTLE INFIDELS offer progressive folk-rock sogs in the vein of Jeff Buckley, acoustic Zeppelin, Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band, Jeff Martin, Roy Harper, you know, that sort of thing. Very cool acoustic guitar, upright bass & cello. The moodchild of songwriter/guitarist/luthier/archer Ed Bond, the Gentle Infidels were formed in November 2006 as a trio with fretless bassist Ferdy Belland and cellist Chris Rzepa. Their music is honestly emotional, delivering dark subject matter with striking power that seperates them from most modern folk-rock acts. Able to perform with a wide variety of musicians and artists, the Gentle Infidels are a band for all seasons... even if they do bring a touch of winter to your sunny summer's day.
