Formed in 1986, the Buffalo-based scrappy punk trio was marked early on as followers of the Minneapolis punk-pop sound encapsulated by bands like the Replacements, Soul Asylum, and Husker Du. However, that all changed with the 1995 album A Boy Named Goo. A song from that record, “Name”, became the Goo Goo Dolls’ first real hit and propelled the disc to double platinum status.
