Event Description

Mandolin master John Reischman has been a formidable presence in acoustic music for years, and for good reason.
Bluegrass Unlimited magazine called the B.C. musician “one of the world’s undisputed masters of the mandolin,” revered for his ability to play genres ranging from bluegrass to jazz to hot swing to Latin and beyond. He played on the Grammy-winning True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe and was a member of the influential Tony Rice Unit, which blended jazz, bluegrass, swing and folk to become one of the seminal groups at the forefront of the “new acoustic music” scene of the early 1980s.
The Vancouver-based Reischman brings his two-time Juno nominated band The Jaybirds to Victoria Dec. 2 for a Christmas benefit concert for Our Place Society. The concert, the band’s 9th annual Christmas show in Victoria, will also be a CD release for the Jaybirds’ seventh album, On That Other Green Shore, hailed by Peghead Nation as “one of the most beguiling bluegrass-rooted recordings of 2017.”
New to the band this year is guitarist Patrick Sauber, who has played and recorded with John Fogerty, Doc Watson, Peter Rowan and many more. Sauber was on the 2016 Grammy- nominated Hazel and Alice Sessions by Laurie Lewis and The Right Hands and was a cast member of the smash hit movie comedy A Mighty Wind.
“I’m really excited to introduce Victoria to the newest Jaybird,” says Reischman. “Patrick Sauber is a fabulous player and we are very happy to have him in the Jaybird family.”
The show’s Christmas theme will include selections from the Jaybirds’ 2015 CD On A Winter’s Night, featuring eight tracks that relate to the Christmas season taken from the rich traditions of English and American folk cultures.
Special guests for the evening are Victoria’s Jeff Dill and fiddle player extraordinaire Miriam Sonstenes, a member of Victoria’s award-winning The Sweet Lowdown.
$5 of every ticket sold will be donated to Our Place Society.
