Event Description
After dazzling more than 300 guests last year, Jubilate Vocal Ensemble will once again be uncorking a full spectrum of musical delights in its second annual production of Winter Light. Led by Music Director Dr. Larry Nickel, the concert will feature a star guest accompanist as well as a choir flush from a category win at the recent Kathaumixw Choral Festival in Powell River.Light-themed pieces from the modern era will include McCartney’s I’ll Follow the Sun, Cat Stevens’ Moon Shadow, and two different takes on Northern Lights: one by Swede Ola Gjeilo, the other by Latvian Eriks Esenvalds featuring hand bells and wine glasses. In Murray Schafer’s Epitaph for Moonlight the voices themselves will supply ample wattage, while Lux Aurumque (Golden Light) by superstar choral composer Eric Whitacre celebrates the birth of Jesus. The choir is especially proud to be performing home-grown arrangements of Catch a Falling Star and Here Comes the Sun by choir members Peter Sicotte and Robin Salkeld, as well as Nickel’s Håll Facklan Högt from his Requiem for Peace.
Full pipe organ accompaniment for Hubert Parry’s I Was Glad – performed at the wedding of Charles and Princess Diana – will come from well-known principal Vancouver Symphony Orchestra organist Ellen Wang.
Winter Light will be performed at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29 at Shaughnessy Heights United Church, 1550 West 33rd Ave. in Vancouver. General admission is $25, or $20 for seniors and $15 for students. Tickets will be available at the door or online at www.jubilate.ca.
