The fruition of the 2011 FolkWest music festival gathers momentum with another fundraising concert:

The Sweet Lowdown

Amanda Blied's love affair with old time music began nine years ago, upon hearing the early recordings of Doc Watson and Clarence Ashley; it reminded her of the songs her dad sang around the house when she was growing up. She's travelled across Canada and throughout the United States tracings the roots of the music she loves. Shanti Bremer had a similar experience with old time music, falling in love with the beauty of clawhammer banjo. Rounding out the trio is classically trained violinist, Miriam Sonstenes, a musician who has delved deeply into a variety of musical traditions. These three talented women produce dulcet tones that remind us of front porch jams and the rolling hills of Appalachia. Following their self-titled, 7-song EP released independently in 2008, the trio has plans to record a full-length album this fall.

Shanti Bremer (banjo, vocals), Miriam Sonstenes (fiddle, vocals) and Amanda Blied (guitar, vocals). www.myspace.com/the.sweet.lowdown

The Clover Point Drifters:

"These fellows are able to nail the high lonesome harmonies that makes this style of music so compelling... in an unselfconscious way, the quintet captures the authenticity and honesty of old-time bluegrass music". - Adrian Chamberlain, Times Colonist

For over 10 years, The Clover Point Drifters have been performing their repertoire of bluegrass, country, folk and blues around Victoria and beyond. The saga began when the guys, each with a long musical resume, drifted into a jam in Alan Law’s basement; a decade later, they're still having a blast. It's been six years since these skilled musicians released their debut CD, "Grapes on the Vine", and the word is out that they've finished recording their sophomore sessions. With material from Bob Wills to Randy Newman and all points in between, and the buttons and knobs in the more than capable hands of Adrian Dolan, the new CD is going to be a gem. Some of the new material will work it's way into the night's set which should tide folks over while they anxiously await the CD release later this year. Always brimming with good humour, the "Drifters" will be pickin' and grinnin' the night away.

Dan Parker (mandolin), Mike Kraft (banjo), Larry Stevens (resophonic guitar), George Robinson (bass), Alan Law (guitar). All contribute vocals.
