Event Description

THE ANDRE CHRYS BAND
Vancouver roots rock with plenty of soul, a touch of twang and stellar songwriting. The Georgia Straight said: Andre Chrys is a singer-songwriter with a taste for the sort of barstool wisdom and dirty-old-town laments that used to be the sole domain of Tom Waits. The lyrics of "Guardian Angel (You've Been Drinking on the Job)", for instance, are cute in a way that the author of "The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)" might appreciate, even if the title gives everything away. "The Modification Song" is equally clever, with its observations of our constant drive--and utter failure--to perfect ourselves.
THE HERMIT
In the Press' words:
Vancouver Province: ‘tight psyche-pop combo that boasts danceable beats and hooky choruses” (March 2009)
Georgia Straight: “Armed with the super-cute Red on vocals and an insanely catchy, peachy-sweet sound” (March 2009)Discorder Magazine: “rife with hooks and transcendent pop moments” (March 2009)
North Shore News: “Turn Up (The Stereo) tops all previous efforts…sublime schizophrenic workout from a great band. 8/10 (March 2009)
Chartattack.com: “Pumping On Our Stereo” (Feb, 2009)
THE YAMS
When you think of Yams you probable envision a Thanksgiving Day table. Mounds of mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, a golden brown turkey and of course… sweet, sticky yams. Well get that out of your mind because while Vancouver’s Yams are one of the most blistering live acts in the city, they’re definitely a group you don’t want at your dinner table. Acid soaked blues and high octane power pop are put through the grinder and spat out as demented tales of substance abuse, sexual deviancy and love gone seriously wrong. Mitch Andres (vocals, bass), Brian Bresset (guitar), Greg Laiken (guitar) and Tim Huston (drums) are four Vancouver musicians looking to leave top forty rock shirtless, penniless and begging for more by the side of the road. Songs written from the point of view of a serial killer, stories of cocaine abuse and schizophrenia somehow become irresistible singalongs when wrapped in the infectious riffs and melodies spun out by the foursome. Brian Bresset’s guitar playing is absolutely incendiary and Mitch Andres' vocals range from a desperate plea to a savage howl. Their debut EP recorded and mixed by Todd Simko of seminal Canadian band Pure is a perfect blend of savage guitars, melody, scathing lyrics and fantastic three minute pop arrangements. “I don’t mind some freaky shit” howl’s Andre on the track I-5, and by the end of a night with the Yams at your table, you sure won’t either.
