Event Description
Kitangus is Gareth Hurwood, Melody Benbow, Leah Winters, Alex MacCuaig and Terry James. These fine performers have been exciting audiences with their unique blend of traditional and contemporary Celtic music and song for many years. Due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and their wide musical interests, Kitangus' music comes out unique. In the face of traditional purists and many Celtic cultural biases, Kitangus coined their own term for their music and style, 'WEST COAST CELTIC'. It is a reflection of the influences that Celtic culture have gone through in space and time to get all the way from Western Europe in centuries past to the Pacific Ocean in the 21st Century. On Vancouver Island, Kitangus has delivered enthused, powerful performances at the world famous Buchart Gardens, historic mansion Craigdarroch Castle, UVic's University Centre Farquhar Auditorium, The Irish Times Pub and to many a folk club in between! From the concert stage to your local pub, this is a band that shares a passion for their music and the tradition from which it grows. Kitangus is always delighted to take an audience along with them.
KITANGUS' music features striking vocal harmonies, fine guitar, mandolin and penny whistle playing, expert percussion, earth rumblin' electric and double bass, and toe-tapping fiddling - not to mention the group's strong stage presence, warmth and humour!
This show is celebrating the release of Kitangus' fourth CD, a double album entitled, "A Jug of This" and "A Jug of That". The disc was produced, mixed and mastered by the great Wynn Gogol at 1 Ton Studios (http://wynngogol.com) and features a guest appearance by the always stellar Calvin Cairns (http://calvincairns.com).
The show starts at 7:30 sharp and promises to let out with plenty of time to catch the fireworks!
