Event Description

It’s hard to think of a more critically acclaimed and popular band than Wilco. The alt-country group led by Jeff Tweedy has grown from a fairly modest ensemble to an act that is renowned for its experimentalism and eclecticism. With Sky Blue Sky, Wilco’s latest album, the group has once again changed direction—this time to a more laidback sound than previously, one that pays tribute to such influences as the Band, Randy Newman, even the Eagles. Yet, as easygoing as the record is, you can bet the Wilco playing an upcoming tour will be a very different beast—one that continually and deftly surprises audiences with new interpretations of old songs, and versions of new material that often leave the original recordings in the dust.

Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco with bassist John Stirratt in 1994, after the breakup of Jeff’s seminal roots-rock band Uncle Tupelo. Wilco followed up its stirring 1995 debut A.M. with Being There, a two-disc set that alerted fans to the group’s ambition to make wider-ranging music, and its determination not to be pigeonholed. With records like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost is Born, Wilco followed its muse even further, creating some of the most remarkable music of the last decade, aided and abetted by avant-garde guitarist Nels Cline on the latter. Meanwhile, though already popular among adventurous music fans, Wilco gained even greater media exposure thanks to the documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. Today, the group easily sells out theatres, where its performances routinely become the stuff of legend to its legions of obsessed fans.
