About

Lubo Alexandrov

Bulgarian-born Lubo Alexandrov grew up on Balkan folk music, but even before he immigrated to Montreal in 1992 he had become fascinated by jazz guitar. His career exploded when chance reconnected him with his roots – and exposed him to the rarely-heard fretless guitar, which is ideal for reaching many of those esoteric notes that are the soul of eastern music. He gradually created a remarkable synthesis – what he calls “Balkan Gypsy Groove” – that combines Bulgarian dance music, gypsy songs, and Turkish intensity then filters it all through an urban jazz sensibility. He put together an amazing band of ethnic virtuosos and named the explosive result the Kaba Horo Ensemble, who make uniquely exciting music that combines jazz-funk complexity with the primal beats that will sweat up the dance floor.
“Compositional density and effervescent energy [that] generates something to charge up both thinking cap and dancing shoes.” –Montreal Mirror
