Gushing reviews extolled the virtues of her smoke-and-whiskey vocals, and compared her to Billie Holiday. Time magazine pronounced the disc “the most exciting, involving vocal performance by a new singer this year,” and the disc went on to sell 200,000 copies worldwide. The Georgia-born 22-year-old went from busking on the streets of Paris to becoming an international sensation with a following in the UK, France and North America.
Her follow-up, eight years in the making, is finally here. Careless Love features Madeleine’s interpretation of classics both old and contemporary, from W.C. Handy’s title track (popularized in the late ‘20s by Bessie Smith) to more contemporary songs like Bob Dylan’s “You’re Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go” and Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love”. An original swing composition, “Don’t Wait Too Long”, written by Peyroux with producer Larry Klein and Norah Jones collaborator Jese Harris which has been featured in a Levis Dockers ad campaign is another highlight, as is Madeleine’s version of Josephine Baker’s “J’ai Deux Amours”. This talented singer might have lost it all, but she’s found her way back on Careless Love.
