GET IN THE VAN: TOUR HACKS FOR TOURING MUSICIANS
With it being so hard to sell records (or earn more than pennies off Spotify streams), independent artists, arena giants, and their labels alike have doubled down on touring, spending more time than ever on the road, much to the delight of music fans. But as always, there’s a right way to go about things and a disastrous way to go about them, and it’s important to know the difference. Whether you play metal (Scott), skate-punk (Steve), the blues (Emily), or any genre, our panelists have collectively logged thousands of hours in tour vans and are here to get you rolling in the right direction...
*****
SCOTT MIDDLETON (Cancer Bats, Southpaw Booking Agency):
Scott Middleton is the former guitarist and co-founder of Punk Metal band Cancer Bats (who have toured most continents, playing with acts like Converge, Alexisonfire, Gallows, Billy Talent). Scott is also a Record Producer/Studio Owner and co-founder and Artist Manager at Southpaw Booking Agency, where he uses his extensive knowledge and experience to help guide and mentor the careers of passionate and like-minded musicians.
EMILY FENNELL (Miss Emily):
Miss Emily has been a full-time musician based in the Kingston area for 20 years. Her 2020 album ‘Miss Emily LIVE at The Isabel’ was nominated for a JUNO last year. She has won four Maple Blues Awards in recent years, including Female Vocalist of the Year (2019 & 2022). Emily’s touring spans Canada, the UK, Europe and this year she is excited to be adding the US to that list.
STEVE RAWLES (Belvedere):
For over 25 year Rawles has lived by this motto, bringing his seminal style of punk rock to good friends and fans all across the globe through his current band Belvedere and former in This Is A Standoff. Steve had another collection of songs that he wanted to share with the world - acoustically. After acquiring his first acoustic guitar in 1993 and ignoring it until 2009, Rawles started writing songs that would come to be his first solo album, ''Bonus Room'', a collection of folk rock songs influenced by mistakes, The Tropics and Grandmothers, which is to be released by Rawles himself in May 2011.
ERIC FILLION (moderator):
Eric is adjunct professor and Buchanan postdoctoral fellow in Canadian history at Queen’s University. His ongoing work on the social and symbolic importance of music, within countercultures and in international relations, builds on the experience he has acquired playing drums with various Montreal-based bands. He is the founder of the Tenzier archival record label as well as the author of JAZZ LIBRE et la révolution québécoise: Musique-action, 1967-1975 and Distant Stage: Quebec, Brazil, and the Making of Canada’s Cultural Diplomacy. *Editor's note: Eric is humble so his bio does not include the fact he played drums in one of Montreal's coolest punk bands, Cobra Noir.
