Event Description
From one island to another, we are very excited to close Victoria's 24th Annual Ska & Reggae Festival with the Canadian debut of one Costa Rica's coolest bands, OJO DE BUEY. Using roots reggae as their sonic base, Ojo De Buey adds splashes of Latin music, Afro-Caribbean rhythms and straight-ahead rock. It's the perfectly diverse background for their positive and uplifting messages. The band was started as a casual project, playing at friends' parties and small bars, and they've kept the vibe of those small, intimate shows even as their audiences have grown. We knew we wanted an extra big sound for an extra big closing Sunday and so we called upon Niagra, ON's unstoppable funk beast MY SON THE HURRICANE. The 12-piece monster features multi-horns, multi-drums and an absolutely wild front woman. When you are in the presence of My Son The Hurricane, standing still is not an option.Joining us from Saskatchewan is the reggae, afro-latin fusion of ORAL FUENTES. Comprised of members from St. Lucia, Ghana, Nigeria, Philippines, Fiji, as well as Canada and the United States, and fronted by Belize native Fuentes, the group weaves sonic influences from all around the world into their sunny reggae. Also on the lineup for Sunday are the reggae/rock trio STREET PHARMACY, returning to us after a highlight performance last year. With new music under their belt, as well as an arsenal of old favourites, Street Pharmacy is guaranteed to delight your ears and help power you through our final day. Hitting the stage and kicking things off hard on our final day is Vancouver power-trio KOWNTERPOINT. Combining an array of genres like reggae, ska, punk, blues, jazz, surf, grunge and hip-hop, their sonic diversity keeps their sets lively and unpredictable. Kownterpoint comes at the audience fast and hard, with an unbridled sense of fun. As is becoming a Sunday tradition, our dear friend and ally in Ska - Young Royal will be on hand to spin the best in classic reggae and ska tunes. Come join us for this jam-packed Sunday that is sure to be an unforgettable way to end off our 24th year!
