Event Description
Now into its 7th year, the UVic Wind Symphony continues its unique collaboration with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy with a concert of music inspired by “Sea and Song,” directed by Steven Capaldo & Lt(N) Catherine Norris.Winner of the 2019 UVic Wind Symphony Concerto Competition, Jesse Johnson, will take centre stage for Ney Rosauro's Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble. Other works on the program include Franco Cesarini’s Blue Horizons, The Sun Paints Rainbows Over the Vast Waves by David Bedford, Alex Shapiro’s electroacoustic work Liquid Compass, and the classic Claude T. Smith fantasy Eternal Father, Strong to Save, based on the traditional British mariner’s hymn of the same name.
Celebrating its 80th anniversary, The Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy is one of six regular force military bands of the Canadian Forces and serves as the official musical unit of the Canadian Forces Maritime Forces Pacific Command (MARPAC). Many School of Music alumni have gone on to perform with Canadian Military ensembles including the Naden Band.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Naden Band of Maritime Forces Pacific Scholarship in Music Performance, awarded annually to second- and third-year School of Music students who demonstrate excellence in brass, woodwind and percussion performance.
