Event Description

Sawdust Collector is a weekly concert series taking place on Tuesday nights at The Gold Saucer, curated by Barbara Adler, Cole Schmidt, James Meger and guests.

May 2nd

Couples Night
(Duo performances by mostly non-couples)

MoonGoat: Wynston Minckler & Paris Favilla

A musical collaboration between Australian saxophonist Paris Favilla and Canadian bassist Wynston Minckler. This project seeks to embody a commitment to all forms of music, art, and sound as possible elements for self-expression in both compositions and improvisations. Contrapuntal stylings, free-jazz musings, film noir themes, deep canadiana folk, and textural improvs are a few of the worlds one can expect to collide in performance.

Reid Jamieson & Carolyn Mill

Vinyl Café regular Reid Jamieson and his long-time songwriting partner and wife Carolyn Mill will slip outside their accessible folkie box to try some new tunes they are working on, including ones for an upcoming collection called The Pigeon & The Dove exploring the theme of homelessness and the many roads one can take to end up on the street. Stripped down vocals and nylon string guitar with their own engaging way of storytelling and harmonizing.

Viviane Houle & Jeff Younger

Two of Canada's strongest improvising voices, guitarist Jeff Younger and vocalist Viviane Houle perform heartachingly beautiful improvised art song, heavy free improvisations and sublime soundscapes. Long time collaborators, this telepathic, fearless duet shares a love of extreme sonic textures, languid melodies, expressionistic maelstroms, gentle spaces and the unknowable cracks in between.

May 9th

A collaboration between Ashley Whitehead & Ben Brown

Movement, Performance Art, Improvised Music

Ashley Whitehead is a performance artist living and working on the traditional, unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, currently also known as Vancouver, BC, Canada. Ashley is constantly shifting her practice to align with her values and work through fear and cultural conditioning to find access to unfiltered impulse, authenticity, and passion. Her work and training involves dance and movement-based practices, Clown, and physical theatre, with an emphasis on improvisation and embodiment. As she looks for ways to connect, Ashley works from a place of thoughtful, abstract sharing, through a field of minute specificity, playful directionality, and broad, sensorial abandon. Above all else, Ashley is interested in community, connection, presence, and support through acceptance - first of ourselves, and then extending that generosity to each other.

Ben Brown is a Vancouver, BC based musician, composer and teacher. Recent highlights include a 6-month solo tour of Europe where Brown collaborated with Musicians/Dancers and studied privately with master Percussionist, Dame Evelyn Glennie. As a Drummer, Brown has worked with musicians such as Wilbert De Joode, K-OS, Jill Barber and Dancers Katie Duck, Su-Feh Lee and Justine Chambers. In April 2013 he received a Juno Award for Best Instrumental Album of the year with the group, Pugs and Crows. Brown is the founder of Music And Movement Mondays (MAMM), Vancouver's weekly collaborative series between live musicians and dancers. As a composer, his works for dance and film have been featured at festivals in Toronto, Mexico and Vancouver. http://www.benbrownsound.com/
