Event Description
FESTIVAL PASS REQUIREDSophia Danai
Sophia released her sophomore album Love Royale in March of this year to critical acclaim; it was prefaced by two singles, “Daytime Dreaming” and “Something to Nothing.” The third single, “Bitter,” released along with a music video this past July, showcases Danai’s creativity which reaches into the various corners of soul, pop and hip-hop.
Khari Wendell McClelland
Khari Wendell McClelland is bending the edges of folk, adult contemporary and soul to create a sound all his own. Reared on gospel, hip-hop, folk and soul in Hitsville, U.S.A., the home of Motown Records, Khari began his musical education early. Every Sunday provided lessons in the roots of African American music and cultural expression through the wafting sounds of Gospel; every other day, the sounds of hip-hop and contemporary R&B blared from car speakers and boom boxes. Hearing his music one is reminded of Bill Withers and contemporary artists such a Tobias Jesso Jr. and Leon Bridges—the richness of traditional forms is interwoven with elements of contemporary urban grit and whispers of melancholy.
Frankie
Vancouver-based four-piece Frankie plays dream-rock, blending ethereal tones and haunting harmonies to create their own distinctive style of music. They are often described as a combination of Fleetwood Mac, Fleet Foxes and First Aid Kit. The band formed in December 2013 for a one-off gig at the same venue where they'd met only a few weeks before. The chemistry among them was undeniable, and over the last two years the four members have become solid friends and adventure seekers, taking their music from Haida Gwaii to the southern tip of the Baja in Mexico.
Phonosonics
Phonosonics are Victoria’s premier rocksteady/roots-reggae massive. With their soulful harmonies, their blazing horns and their old-school grooves, the band has dazzled audiences across B.C., bringing an authentic interpretation of 60s and 70s ska, rocksteady and reggae. With a modern touch and live danceability, Phonosonics invite you to free your behind, so your mind can follow!
