Event Description

Let's dance for the continued survival of Discorder, that mischievous magazine from CiTR Radio 101.9FM.

Discorder Magazine is the wildchild little sister of CiTR 101.9FM, UBC's campus radio station. Discorder has been publishing monthly since 1987, giving love to the underrepresented voices of Vancouver's music and art scenes through features, live show reviews, album reviews and more. Discorder also produces Discorder Radio on CiTR every Tuesday 5-6pm, and Discorder TV on YouTube. Episode One available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKZ3KgVC5dc

FROG EYES |
“My dad left me his acoustic guitar in his will; it was all he had to give, because he wasn’t a rich man. I wrote ten songs on it, and I think that was the real gift he gave me: a love of music, not just the way you all love it (music lovers), but also a love of creating it, sowing myself, in some small way, into the story of music.

I wrote about Joseph Beuys, about B. Traven, about God and Abraham and Isaac, about my dad being addicted to speed when he was 17.

I needed my crew and I found them. Three women: Melanie Campbell, my life-partner and long-time drummer, returned to the band after a hiatus. And my old friend Shyla Seller, an archivist and book designer who happens to also be a really precise and powerful piano player. And Terri Upton, who plays both stand-up bass, and electric bass.

I am a lucky person.” – Carey Mercer

WEIRD CANDLE |
Robert Katerwol & Kaleb Blagdon smash EBM and punk together for a dark and frantic dance/mosh event reminiscent of Minstry's 80s synthpunk origins. Bizarre but incredibly catchy keyboard ensembles and heavy industrial beats combined with Katerwol's 70s punk style stage antics make Weird Candle an act that lives up to their name and beyond. https://weirdcandle.bandcamp.com/

THE BACKHOMES |
The Backhomes are a two-piece DIY band formed in Montréal, 2009 by musician Kees Dekker and visual artist/animator Aimée van Drimmelen. Currently based on the west coast of Canada the duo has toured extensively and released two full length records (ONLY FRIEND 2013 ; TIDALWAVE 2015) and an EP (TALK B/W BACKWARDS SUNSHINE 2014) all of which were recorded and produced in a little house by the ocean. They are currently working on their third full length album, due out Spring 2016.

MALCOLM JACK |
Solo effort from DADA PLAN frontman Malcolm Biddle, featuring looped analog drum machines and synths that provide a meditative backdrop for wordy psychedelic folk. Strangely nostalgic, but fiercely contemporary.

EXPERIENCE THIS |
Experience This has been around for about a year now, playing the blues. Since founding member and vocalist Kate Moss left for Australia this winter, Experience This has carried on as a solid trio with Jen Smyth on drums, Laura Piasta on bass, Johan Björck on organ, and guest vocalists.
