Event Description

The Wilderness Committee and OWC Productions present Songs not Stumps - A benefit concert for the Walbran Valley featuring Carmanah and special guests. All proceeds from the evening will go towards the Wilderness Committee’s campaign to save one of the island’s last remaining old growth forest. Tickets are 15$ (available at the door), doors at 730pm.

About the Walbran
After massive protests and public outcry in the early 1990’s over proposed clear-cutting in the Carmanah and Walbran Valleys, the provincial government created the Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park. While the park protects some incredible forest, the government left the roughly 500-hectare Central Walbran Valley out of the park. The Central Walbran contains arguably the most impressive and massive trees on the Island, in areas like the Castle Grove and Black Diamond Grove. Now a new company, Teal Jones, has its sights set on these giants, with only groups like the Wilderness Committee standing in the way.

—Carmanah—

Carmanah embraces the energy of Canada’s beautiful west coast and chose its name to honour the ancient rainforest on Vancouver Island, the Carmanah Valley.  Known for connecting with audiences of all ages and musical preferences, the band delivers an eclectic sound that incorporates elements of folk, funk, rock and reggae.  Four-part harmonies, supported by a grooving rhythm second, fiddle playing, guitars and a lap-slide, all give Carmanah its unique and captivating sound.

—West My Friend—

Since West My Friend was conceived in a Victoria café in 2009, they’ve emerged as a unique voice in the city’s music scene. Described as everything from indie-roots to chamber-folk, their acoustic blend of instruments and four-part harmonies challenges the conventions of popular music to create a performance that is both engaging and innovative. Songs are created through a collaborative process: well-crafted and clever lyrics, acrobatic mandolin riffs, flawless bass lines, and richly textured accordion combine as every member brings forward their own ideas and experiences.

— Katabat —

Formed in 2014, Katabat are a bright, jangly indie rock band from Victoria. Named after a type of wind that cascades down a mountainside, the band echoes their namesake by playing rollicking, punchy rock songs with sharp twists and occasional dips into dream pop territory. A subdued lyrical approach, contrasted with a boisterous rhythm section ensures a novel experience for the listener.
