Event Description
Announcing the release of a new full length recording by one of the BC’s premiere instrumental jazz groups. Jon Miller Quartet's "Three Days in Winter" was recorded in three sessions this past December and February and features nine original jazz compositions by band members Miller, Rob Cheramy, Monik Nordine and James Young. Produced by Jon Miller and engineered by Brent Jarvis at Habourview Studio, Esquimault BC. Jacket design by Victoria artist and musician Doug Galbraith. Photos by Brad Yamenech and Samantha Hill. This marks the group's second recorded output following their debut release "Orchidology" in 2009 which was nominated in the category "album of the year" in Monday Magazine's 2009 M awards and appeared on Earshot Jazz Charts for campus radio airplay. Since then the group has appeared in several editions of Victoria JazzFest International at local and Island music spots including the Crofton Hotel, Lasqueti Hotel, Hermann's Jazz Club and the City of Victoria's City Scene Concerts.
With this outing the quartet continues to mine a mostly acoustic instrumental jazz vein which includes trace influences from outside the jazz realm including blues, fusion and improvised music. Covering a range of moods from meditative and introspective to raucous and freewheeling, this new recording teams the lively upright bass and drums combo of leader miller and James Young with the dynamic playing of Monik Nordine on saxes and one of the area's finest jazz guitarists, Rob Cheramy.
Despite the lack of any overt signs, listeners often detect a West Coast element in the group's approach to jazz. The open sound of the piano-less quartet and a mix of modern and retro elements in sound and overall approach are possible contributors to this. New for this recording is a more equal sharing of composing credits among band members including two new compositions by guitarist Rob Cheramy, "Through the Fog" and "Goin' Uptown."
The quartet would like to acknowledge the support of many local businesses who donated goods to the fundraiser event held in November 2014 at Merlin's, as well as individual listeners who purchased advance copies of the new CD. Continuing the theme of partnering with local business there will be many amazing door prizes at this event, among them CDs and Gift Certificates to a variety of local businesses. Copies of the new CD will be available for the first time at this upcoming Release Party on May 22. The band will also play at Crofton Hotel at 2 pm on May 24th and has a date in the upcoming Victoria JazzFest on June 23. More dates and information at jonmillerdrums@weebly.com
