Event Description
Titled “the Royal Family of Reggae”, Morgan Heritage have been at it for over two decades. Sibling rivalry hasn’t seemed to affect the Morgans in any way, with the roots-reggae all-stars consisting of four brothers and a sister. The group continues to be a force on the festival circuit worldwide, giving fans a taste of their soulful brand of roots reggae that brings in touches of dub, r&b and dancehall. The group certainly won’t have a shortage of material to choose from at Ship Point, but fans should expect to hear some hot new tracks from the Jamaican outfit who just recently released their 10th studio album.Reigning from Brooklyn NY, The Slackers have been playing their trademark brand of ska and rocksteady music since the early ’90s. With a vast collection of albums, the group has played over 2000 concerts in 32 different countries. Bandleader Vic Ruggiero calls The Slackers’ sound “jamaican rock n’ roll” with influences ranging from Bob Dylan to The Skatalites. These guys keep it real by combining punk attitude, soulful vocals, and traditional ska instrumentation, creating a unique contribution to the ska genre that combines both old and new. This will mark The Slackers’ third festival appearance, the first of which happened 12 years ago.
For 24 years “Keith and Tex” was just a name on a record in the reggae section at the local record store, but in 1994, the duo reunited and have been intermittently performing and recording since. They released the aptly titled comeback album Together Again in 1997, and followed it up recently with 2013’s Redux and 2015’s Just Passing Through. They will be gracing us with a gorgeous sunlit performance on July 3rd where they will be backed by legendary Brooklyn ska/reggae group The Slackers for a one-of-a-kind show.
Acclaimed Vancouver selecter DJ Dubconscious will be spinning between acts. Dubconscious has proven himself to be one of the top dub and reggae DJs in Canada, earning residency at the prestigious Shambhala festival in Salmo, BC. He also hosts a weekly dub night at the Keefer Bar in Vancouver, and a poster for a previous weekly night of his was recently featured in a Major Lazer’s video for their hit “Bumaye”.
