Event Description
"The Anthropocalypse: A Psychedelic Talk Opera" :: 4:00 - 5:00 PM :: $10 (regular) $5 (student)Concerned that the human species is hurtling towards extinction? You're not alone. 2 Dope Boys in a Cadillac present the world's first psychedelic talk opera, "The Anthropocalypse," a darkly comedic look at the end of humanity. This poetic misadventure has been described as "a spoken word tour de force," "industrial-strength, unrelenting trippiness," and "the most viscerally and emotionally destabilizing show since dubstep, just, way better than dubstep."
"Past Presence; Pleiotropy & the impossible cycle of being" :: 5:00 - 6:00 PM :: $10 (regular) $5 (student)
“Past Presence; Pleiotropy & the impossible cycle of being” is a collection of prose poems telling the stories of strangers and self from Magpie Ulysses' experiences of hitchhiking over 25,000km across North America in her late teens and early twenties.
The 40 minute piece is a condensed, yet expansive piece of writing exploring the themes of adaptations, space, fear, faith, place, othering and the act of storytelling while following a rich Canadian landscape.
As a performance, the project crosses the boundaries between spoken word, performance poetry and theatre with a reflective yet explosive eclectic electric soundtrack composed by James Lamb.
“…the most captivating and original spoken word performance I have seen in years. Years of hitchhiking, memories and life lessons are distilled in a series of stories that are simultaneously life-affirming, terrifying and simply brilliant. Go see this show. For the sake of all things poetry, go see this show.“
- Charles Hamilton, founder Tonight it’s Poetry – Saskatoon
These poems are dedicated in the honour of the missing and murdered women of the highway of tears. May there be rest and resolution for their friends and families.
"CFSW Poetry Slam: Bouts #9 and #11" :: 7:00 - 9:00 PM, 9:00 - 11:00 PM :: $12 (regular) $7 (student)
Four teams compete in a four-round poetry slam judged by the audience. Poetry slam is a competition in which poets present original work without the use of costumes, props, or musical accompaniment, within a three minute time limit.
"RELEASE!" :: 11:00 PM - 1:00 AM :: $15 (regular) $10 (student)
A night of celebration and Release. Preliminary bouts will be over, and for fourteen teams the pressure will be off. We will also be celebrating the release of Megan Lane's latest CD, "Sounding the Animal," produced by Hawksley Workman. When we mix in liberal doses of The Dildettes and Kris Demeanor we're, sure this after-hours joint will get to rockin' every body into a state of Release!
