Event Description
The Victoria Baroque Players, in collaboration with St. John the Divine Anglican Church, are pleased to present Victoria’s first ever period-instrument performance of Bach’s St. John Passion, featuring renowned tenor Benjaming Butterfield as the Evangelist and Maestro Timothy Vernon conducting. Also featured are the St. John’s Chamber Singers and several up and coming young singers in solo roles:Nathan McDonald, bass, (in the role of Jesus)
Aliz Ballabas & Emma Hannan soprano
Kiiri Michelsen, mezzo
Isaiah Bell & Josh Lovell, tenor
Andrew Erasmus & Nicholas Allen, bass
Bach’s St. John Passion is an oratorio that derives its subject from chapters of the Gospel of St. John that recount the last days of Jesus’ life. First performed in 1724, it is a vivid and intense work whose theatricality is framed perfectly by Bach’s sublime musical prose. Smaller, shorter, more intimate and more dramatic than the better known of Bach’s passions - St. Matthew - “John” is a musical experience not to be missed. A rare opportunity to hear one of Bach’s sacred masterpieces performed on period instruments.
