Event Description

Late show:

T
THE UNSUPERVISED is gleefully known as The Great White Shark of Canadian Jazz. Totally slamming, hard hitting, adventuresome and fearless, the group has devoured stages across Canada and will be releasing a new cd and riding the shark from Toronto to Halfiax during their 2011 jazz festival summer tour. This band will devour the future. Kristian Naso - trumpet, Colin Maskell - tenor sax, Jeff Younger - guitar, Russell Sholberg - bass, Ben Brown - drums. http://www.jeffyounger.net/projects/projects.php?nr=1
Coat Cooke’s new electronically upholstered quintet is The Meta 5. Featuring Coat Cooke with J.P. Carter (trumpet & electronics), Chad MacQuarrie (guitar), Tommy Babin (bass) and Kenton Loewen (drums), the quintet performs harmolodic compositions fresh from Coat’s pen, mixing them with a searing spontaneity and an improvisational style all their own. Using groove and texture, solos and ensemble improv, The Meta 5 makes every set passionate, funny, and rollicking. Hear them for yourself, and you’ll know why they’re becoming known as a gem of a band.

Formed in the Fall of 2008 by Vancouver-based guitarist Cole Schmidt, The Pugs and Crows perform a blend of original compositions and free improvisations that draw inspiration from a myriad of influences ranging from Argentinian tango music to the compositions of John Zorn. Often described as cinematic, The Pugs and Crows' debut album, Slum Towers, takes listeners on a journey through a varied soundscape of songs that, according to a review in Difficult Music, have "a gritty elegance."
