Event Description
FOOLS AND KINGS, THE BROKEN BOATS BAND and ILLITERATTY"Midwest meets London" best describes Canadian band, Fools and Kings. A vast array of musical influences, from both sides of the Atlantic led to songs that are lyrical, driven and raw. Twin brothers Matthew and Gareth Schroenn from Vancouver, Drew Pearcey from Toronto and Tod Hoodge from Victoria formed Fools and Kings in the hot summer of 2008 and poured into it the best of their musical experience, cutting away the fat and delivering something that is unpretentious, muscular and real. Their self-titled debut album was produced, mixed and mastered by legendary producer, Warne Livesey (Midnight Oil, Matthew Good, 54/40, The The).

Formed in 2009, The Broken Boats Band produces a unique, but natural mix of bluegrass, country and folk music. It’s the kind of music that mixes perfectly amongst the sound of laughter, beers cracking and feet stomping in your smokey living room or on your front porch. The foundation of the sound is the distinctive banjo styling of Philip Stoker. Banjo licks that seem to be born out of jazz and funk influences, but remain firmly rooted in traditional bluegrass, create a new and exciting sound. The tones created by violin player Rebecca Rose are both beautiful and gritty. With the classiness of a Classical violin player but the grind of a toe-tappin’ fiddle player, Rebecca further elevates this unique sound. Mandolin player Dave Mealiea is the kind of musician that makes every player around him better.
