Event Description
Local music fans will be thrilled to learn that fiddle-phenomena, Ashley MacIsaac, has just announced his first Victoria concert in almost seven years. This is a rare opportunity to see one of Canada's most celebrated roots musicians of all time during his whirlwind visit to BC, just days before his 35th birthday. Fourteen-year-old sensation, Quinn Bachand, will accompany on guitar. The two have enjoyed performing together several times in 2009 (Vancouver Celtic Fest, Edmonton Folk Festival, and Cape Breton's Celtic Colours International Festival). The evening will open with a set by Qristina & Quinn Bachand and their band. With sales in excess of 500,000 albums, Ashley MacIsaac, has garnered international acclaim by playing the fiddle in that hard-nosed, traditional Cape-Breton style, while adding his own spin, mixing genres and updating Celtic music to appeal to a broader spectrum of fans. Considered something of a local legend and prodigy by the time of his impressive 1992 debut "Close To The Floor" at 17, Ashley broke through to the mainstream with the double-platinum genre-bending "Hi, How Are You Today?" in 1995. International radio play for the single, "Sleepy Maggie", and a regular slot on MuchMusic made Ashley an instant Canadian icon. Ashley has toured with the likes of Philip Glass and The Chieftains, and has performed on the "Conan O’Brian Show", "The Today Show", at Carnegie Hall and the Acropolis in Greece. In November, Ashley was featured on the BRAVO TV series "Star Portraits". Watch the episode at: http://www.bravo.ca/television/star-portraits/episodes.asp and see the portrait he chose at his website. In breaking news, Ashley appears in "The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights", a documentary that follows the band during their 2007 Canadian tour. September's Toronto International Film Fest was the Canadian premiere; The U.S. premiere will be at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas this March. Jack White has also invited Ashley to Nashville to record a new country blues single. MacIsaac continues to record; He and his sister Lisa MacIsaac (of the band Madison Violet) have just released an independent CD of traditional music called "A Family Tradition". Ashley will release his 11th album, "Crossover", later this year.
