"At this point in David Francey’s stellar career, we are down to expecting near perfection delivered with each succeeding album."
- Les Siemieniuk, Penguin Eggs
David Francey, the internationally acclaimed, three-time Juno Award winner is a singer/songwriter with an uncommon ability to reach others through song. His storytelling, strong vocals and powerful lyrics combine to make his subjects - from the foreclosed farmer to the Canadian soldier in Dieppe, to the working Joe, to the teenage lover - immediate and intensely moving.
David’s ability to connect and create a rapport with audiences is due to a combination of his warm and engaging stage presence, his humour and humility, along with an uncanny ability to make the personal universal. His lyrics range from the biographical to the observational, always drawing the listener into a world of sophisticated simplicity and warmth.
To date, David has released seven CDs all of which have received critical acclaim. Canadians are familiar with the title track of Skating Rink (2004), which is now the theme song of CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada. Far End of Summer (2002) and Skating Rink (2003) won back-to-back JUNOS in the Best Roots and Traditional Solo Category. The Waking Hour (2004), was nominated for a 2005 Juno and the two CDs released in 2006, The First Set: Live from Folk Alley and Carols for a Christmas Eve have been very successful and well received.
David’s latest release, Right of Passage, which won the 2008 Best Roots and Traditional Juno, is a quintessentially Canadian experience with songs such as “The Ballad of Bowser McCrea,” “All Lights Burning Bright,” and “Leaving Edmonton” spanning the Canadian Cultural experience and like David’s performances, appealing to all.
"Every song on Right of Passage tells you that David Francey is a plebian poet who can make the prosaic sublime."
- Rob Weir
