Event Description
Come and be part of two world premiere performances. These new works are the first of our six major 40th anniversary commissions for choir and orchestra. Funded by the outstanding Arts Partners in Creative Development program, all six will be heard during the next two years.Sir John Tavener of Britain is one of the world’s finest and most famous composers. After many years of focusing on sacred music in the Orthodox tradition, he has recently turned to more secular concerns. His Miroir des Poémes for choir, two string quartets and bass is based on the beautiful French poetry of Jean Biés.
Peter Berring is a prominent Canadian composer from British Columbia. A long-time collaborator with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, he also has Icelandic roots. This is the source of his new work, Hervor, Maiden King. Described as a “choral-opera”, this Tolkein-like story is based on an old Norse saga. The heroine, Hervor, determined to follow in the footsteps of her father Angantyr, a Viking warrior King slain in battle. She visits his grave on the Danish Island of Samsey to claim Tyrfling, his flaming sword. The amazing father-daughter dialogue which ensues makes for riveting listening.
