Event Description
JEFF YOUNGER PRESENTS vol 24:DUOS AND COVERS! - Vancouver's most creative voices come together to twist and celebrate their favourite songs w/ JEFF YOUNGER & AARON JOYCE, SHANNON SCOTT & GUEST, CARMAN J PRICE & CRAIG SALKELD, ANNDREYAH VARGAS & GAVIN YOUNGASH, D TREVLON & GUEST
Jeff Younger is best known as a mad genius of particularly quirky compositional and improvisational tendencies. He is also addicted to smoothies, enjoys strong coffee and has been known to quote Whitesnake lyrics when words of great wisdom are required. On occasion, he also straps on an acoustic guitar and sings his sensitive manheart out, with a grin and a wink. He will do that on this evening, joined by Aaron Joyce. As a session player, Aaron Joyce has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including Dan Mangan, Hannah Georgas, Rae Spoon, Christa Couture, Jess Hill and James Lamb. He also leads two of his own projects (A Ghost To Kill Again and Spearbeak) as well as writing and performing singer-songwriter material.
Shannon Scott hails from Red Deer, Alberta but calls Vancouver home. Under the influence of a jazz education and a wide variety of artists, her music is sophistication with a hook. Citing Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, and Leonard Cohen as only a few of many inspirations, her style is full of complexities flavoured with a catchy flair. With poetically engaging lyrics, Shannon calls for the heart of the listener, the ear of the critic, and the artist in the soul.
Anndreyah Vargas (vocals) and Gavin Youngash (guitar) share an appreciation for honest, heartfelt music. Despite a mutual history of performance and study, this evening presents a debut performance for the duo. Featuring arrangements of your favorite Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, and Sigur Ros songs.
Carman J. Price is a jazz vocalist who has found himself busy in the Vancouver choral music scene, most recently as a member of the internationally acclaimed vocal chamber ensemble, musica intima. Originally from Regina, SK, Carman has burned himself out on several disciplines including dinner theatre, children's entertainment, music education, sandwich artistry and beekeeping. However, after attending Capilano College (now University), Carman's love of jazz propels him through whatever other crap he has to do. Craig Salkeld is a peerless songwriter, arranger, producer, vocalist, pianist, trumpeter and crokinole champion. His superb 1995 solo album "Captain Vengeance" was ignored by audiences and critics alike, excepting one very positive review from Dawayne Bailey, a guy who played guitar with Chicago (Craig's favourite band) for about 5 minutes in the early '90s. Craig is a ridiculously prolific songwriter and headed the band The Playground with Carman on backing vocals for one very fun gig in 1999 before disbanding. Originally from Saskatoon, SK, Craig chooses to avoid the spotlight and all vegetables.
