About
Arturo Sandoval
Truly blessed with a horn of plenty, Cuban-born trumpet virtuoso Arturo Sandoval is without peer on his instrument. Born outside of Havana in 1949, the classically-trained Sandoval became a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Irakere, whose innovative mix of jazz, classical and traditional Cuban music created a sensation in the international music scene in the late '70s. Originally a protégé of horn icon Dizzy Gillespie (the first man to seriously incorporate Latin music into mainstream jazz), Sandoval has blazed a meteoric path that has seen him win four Grammys, six Billboard awards, and an Emmy. His distinctive high notes and awesome command of trumpet and flugelhorn can be heard on jazz records by Woody Herman, Michel Legrand, and Stan Getz. He has done lots of pop sessions with the likes of Gloria Estefan, Dave Grusin and Alicia Keys, and is also a star in the classical realm, performing with symphony orchestras worldwide. Many of us last saw Sandoval in an electrifying performance with Justin Timberlake during the 2004 Grammy Awards Show. This prodigiously talented musician will be appearing with Phil Magallanes piano, Dennis Marks bass, Tomas Cruz percussion, Felipe Luis LaMoglia sax, and Alexis Arce drums."If you can imagine the burst of a young Gillespie, the roaring of Fats Navarro and the sweet and light articulation of Clifford Brown, then you have some idea of what Sandoval can do."- London Observer
