Along came producer John Ellis (Be Good Tanyas), who helped Leslie make her first record Bird in the House in ‘97. Tom Zillich (Westender) said it was “one of the best Vancouver indie releases I’ve heard.” Anyway, it got her off the streets & into some coffeehouses & clubs where she set her sights on the concert stage.
Following her first Western Canadian tours with the songwriters collective Grrrls with Guitars, Leslie has since shared bills with beloved roots music artists such as Mary Gauthier, Harry Manx, & Jim Byrnes. Invited to showcase at NXNE & Alberta Showcase ’03, touring solo, with producer John Ellis (Be Good Tanyas) or with her band the Rosehippies, Leslie's songs about train-tracks & semi-trucks, haystacks & high-rises, telephone lines & barbed wire fences will take you all the beautiful & terrifying places she’s been.
Inspired by the disappearance of grain elevators from the prairies, Leslie’s new CD Savage Country is receiving four-star reviews from DJs and music writers around the world. The #4 Most Played Folk/Roots album on Galaxie Satellite Radio in January 2004, a track from the album also made Leslie a Semifinalist in the International Song Contest 2003. Chosen as CD of the Month in Western Living Magazine, Savage Country hit the Top 20 on Europe's Most Popular Indie Chart, charted at college radio, & has been picked up for airplay on the CBC, BBC, & Australian National Public Radio.
