Event Description
. Thursday, Oct 19th IMU & CiTR present The Feminists Homecoming show w/ Bend Sinister, The Painted Birds + Mahogany Frog @ The LAMPLIGHTER, 210 Abbott Street . Doors 8pm / $10BEND SINISTER - These skilled musicians weave together complex material, switching up duties on different instruments through-out their sweaty glorious sets, and seriously rocking out and taking audiences to shared crescendos. The band's progressive rock borrows from legendary bands as early Genesis and Yes and mixes it up with a current sound which has been favorably compared to The Mars Volta, and has "more time signatures than you can tap your toes to" (Discorder). A distinctive stage presence, they've got skill and drive. Watch out!
THE FEMINISTS - An energetic, engaging combination of angelic vocals along with jangle-punk guitar and driving, emotive keyboards, The Feminists bring together a powerful combination of unpredictable, loud, and exciting sound. Jet engine chaos is instantly replaced by fragile, delicate beauty before leaping back to frenzied distortion: power-pop meets art-rock meets psychedelia meets emo-core. One of Vancouver's hardest working indie bands, The Feminists have charted on college stations from Nanaimo to Halifax, toured across Canada without an agent, manager or record label support, and opened for bands like The Weakerthans and NoMeansNo.
The PAINTED BIRDS - Formerly known as Spark That Screams, their innovative wall-to-wall sound garnered them comparisons to Radiohead and Godspeed You Black Emperor. Crafting psychedelic rock infused with electronica and a unique combination of theremin, flute, cello, and sequencer, be sure to catch the band's new sound in their newest incarnation!
MAHOGANY FROG is a collective of musicians who, have explored the boundaries of their own creativity and abilities since their inception and create experimental yet extremely catchy rock n’ roll and have played with notable Canadian acts such as Moneen, Projektor, The Junior Panthers, The Watercolor Movement and Eric’s Trip. The undeniable intensity of their live performance has amazed and assaulted listeners across Canada, and their musicianship and originality have won Mahogany Frog recognition and respect. The Frog's intense, explosive feedback-ridden guitars and driving drumming suggest a sense of urgency, then they change it up and explore composition and orchestration with sounds and melodies, projected with a raw forceful energy.
