==================

The Detroit Cobras have made a career out of mining for gold. That gold comes in the form of obscure chestnuts by formative R ‘n’ B, soul and rock ‘n’ roll songwriters. But the Detroit quintet is more than just a cover band—the Cobras put their own spin on the songs they know and love. With a singer, Rachel Nagy, who has been described as having Patsy Cline’s pipes and Courtney Love’s attitude, and her partner-in-grime guitarist Mary Ramirez, the Detroit Cobras add fresh fire to attic treasures by Isaac Hayes, Bobby Womack and Hank Ballard on their latest, Baby.

The decade-old group’s third record, Baby mixes three-chord grunge and timeless Motown funk in a selection of stomping rockers and restrained scorchers (not to mention an original, the ultra-sexy “Hot Dog”). NPR and New York Magazine critic Ken Tucker chose the disc as one of the ten best of last year, alongside the Fiery Furnaces, Kanye West and Fiona Apple, and he’s not the only fan: revered Brit DJ John Peel championed them until his death last year. (Apparently, he played a song by the Cobras and read a letter from them on his last show.) On a more commercial level, the group’s bristly renditions of “Cha Cha Twist” and “Ya Ya Ya (Looking for My Baby)” spruced up major ad campaigns for Diet Coke and Budweiser. And now, with the addition of Oblivions and Reigning Sound mastermind Greg Cartwright on guitar, this relentlessly touring band is more lethal than ever. Forget Snakes on a Plane—this is the summer of the Detroit Cobras.
