Seemingly overnight, Panic! At the Disco has emerged as front-runners in the contemporary rock sweepstakes. The young Las Vegas band’s debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, is sweeping the nation with its catchy dance rhythms, emo melodies, a mix of futuristic and nostalgic sounds, witty lyrics and manic energy. The record entered the Billboard charts at #112 and sold 10,000 copies in its first week alone, and has since gone platinum. Panic! At the Disco has been selling out clubs and halls from coast to coast, including a recent Vancouver appearance, and the band puts on a ridiculously entertaining stage show, complete with circus performers and dancers.
Discovered by Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, Panic! At the Disco first came together when childhood friends Ryan Ross and Spencer Smith began playing Blink-182 songs together at the age of 13. By the time they graduated high school, the fully-formed Panic! At the Disco was capturing top spots on PureVolume and Myspace charts. The video for the band’s single, “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”, has been viewed 5 million times on YouTube.
Bloc Party is an art-rock/post-punk revival band known for spikey guitar rock and hair-raising sets. The London group’s debut Silent Alarm won over critics and was voted by NME as the 2005 album of the year, and went platinum in the U.K. Though still an underground phenomenon in North America the band has drawn sold-out crowds to its shows on this side of the Atlantic as well.
A side-project from Andrew McMahon of the piano pop-punk band Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin hit the ground running when the group’s 2005 debut Everything in Transit sold 22,000 copies in its first week of release. A video for the song “The Mixed Tape” hit #1 on VH1’s VSpot Top 20 Countdown, and a remix of “Bruised” appears on the Snakes on a Plane soundtrack.
