Event Description
Join Anthea Feaver at the Hotel Wolfe Island on March 28th for a special workshop and show celebrating music written, performed by, and about notable women in 20th-century folk music. Featuring songs from Maybelle Carter, Elizabeth Cotten, Etta Baker, Ola Belle Reed, Jean Ritchie, Violet Hensley, and more. The workshop will begin at 6pm in the piano room followed by a performance from 7:30-9:30 in the main room.Anthea Feaver is a Wolfe Island-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Knitting together the old and new, Anthea’s original music combines the syncopated rhythms and repetitive melodic appeal of her favourite folk traditions with impressionistic lyrics that meditate on family, love, loss, and the passage of time. Alongside these enduring themes, Anthea’s songs reflect on social issues, neurodiversity, and environmentalism. From icicles falling on heads to long-lost family letters, her songs shift deftly between bleakness and hope.
Workshop details:
Anthea will discuss and teach a selection of tunes collected from or written by female folk instrumentalists. All instruments and levels welcome. Recommend familiarity with learning by ear and comfort playing at least basic chords and melodies.
