Event Description
Under Nicholas Fairbank’s baton the Via Choralis choir will combine with a professional chamber ensemble to perform an exciting concert of Hispanic music, culminating in the première performances of Fairbank’s latest composition: Canción amazónica.Fairbank studied the local rhythms and melodies of eastern Peru during the summer of 2015 while residing at the Centro Selva in the Amazonian region. He employs texts by Peruvian writers in both Spanish and the local Shipibo-Conibo language to explore different themes or moods in the five movements of this piece.
Victoria and Peru have a special bond through the agency of Mosqoy. “Mosqoy” means “dream” in the local Quechua language of Peru. Mosqoy is a not-for-profit business based both in Victoria, BC, Canada and in Cusco, Peru, which aims “to promote educational and cultural rights for Andean communities in Peru.” Each year Mosqoy invites one or two Peruvian students to spend 6 months in Victoria, and this year’s students have been invited to participate in these concerts.
Partial proceeds from the concerts will go to support the “dreams” of the Peruvian people by donation to Mosqoy.
