Event Description
In winter as the days grow shorter it feels like nature is curling up and withering, but for thousands of years people have used the evergreen tree to symbolize that there is always life and hope even in the darkest of times. This winter, our Tree of Life concerts will bring that spirit of life into the darkest nights of the year, combining the timelessness of music that has endured over centuries with the freshness of some of the most new and exciting Canadian and World pieces being sung today. Featured is the world premiere of Beyond the Violet Rays by our composer-in-residence Georgina Craig. Two themes intertwine in Tree of Life—first, there is the feeling of winter with pieces such as Pakkanen (Frost) and Don MacDonald’s Winter Sun; then there is the greenery of new life appearing with Jeff Enns’ Tree of Life, and Here on These Branches by Sarah Quartel. The choir will not neglect its medieval roots gifting the audience with traditional 12th C sacred pieces that celebrate the Christmas season. In typical Ensemble Laude style, these concerts will transport the audience through time and space, from solemnity to playfulness to celestial heights. We hope you can join us!
