Event Description
Mixing Monteverdi with The Magnetic Fields, Ron Sexsmith with Rautavaara, and Arvo Pärt with Arcade Fire, Indiekör by the Coastal Sound Youth Choir returns with a boundary-pushing choral playlist of indie-rock and choral classics in a high energy mix on April 12 & 13 at Christ Church Cathedral, 7:30pm.This year’s Indiekör - expanded to two performances due to demand - features brand new arrangements from an array of Western Canada’s foremost arrangers and composers. The award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir will bring their dazzling sense of stylish musicality to works by Fleet Foxes, Woodpigeon, Feist, Hey ocean! and more. The 68-member choir is well known for incorporating choreography, movement, and unexpected surprises into their performances to delight and engage their audiences.
Last year Carrie Tennant, one of Canada’s brightest choral conductors, wondered what would happen if she took the indie pop and rock songs her singers listened to, added in the choral music she loved, and performed it all in Vancouver’s beautiful Christ Church Cathedral. That first Indiekör performance became one of the hottest tickets in the city; the concert sold out and 250 people were turned away at the door. Clearly, Tennant had hit upon a winning combination.
Tennant is ideally qualified to bridge these disparate worlds. Besides being a sought-after choral conductor, she plays keyboards and sings with Vancouver’s long-standing indie band, The Salteens, who will again be the Indiekör house band.
Indiekör promises an unusual mix of indie-rock and traditional choral music, performed by one of Canada’s best youth choirs. Treat yourself and your friends and order tickets today.
