Zaac Pick and The Belle Game with guest Riun Garner
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $10.00 in advance at Zulu, Red Cat, Biltmore
Buy tickets online at: www.ticketweb.ca
In the great tradition of Canadian folk musicians, singer-songwriter Zaac Pick wears his heart on his sleeve. His debut solo EP, Fierce Wind, is a personal storybook of experience and memory. Canadian music blog North by East West claims the album contains “all the elements for great music: pretty and solid song structure, thoughtful lyrics, gorgeous melodies, lovely orchestration, sublime production,” (www.nxew.ca March 3, 2010). Most recently, Pick earned the top prize in Vancouver’s Shore 104.3FM Summer Song Search.
Check out Zaac’s winning song “My Century”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQnI2EkCS5s
Originally intended to be a one-off backup band for Adam Nanji’s solo record, the members of The Belle Game realized their potential as a band while collaborating on new songs and playing live. After a summer of late nights, basement rehearsals and impromptu shows, the band established their sound around simplistic instrumentation, harmonies, and poetic lyricism and shared male/female vocals. Since the release of their debut EP Inventing Letters at the end of 2009, the band often take the form of an 8-10 piece collective, adding layers of strings, percussion, vocals, guitars, banjos, glockenspiels, trumpets and whatever else they can use to compliment their sound.

Vancouver Is Awesome and Discorder party! with:
41st & Home, Oh No! Yoko, The Oh Wells
and more!
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $10.00 at the door
Sometimes the most inspiring landscapes can be found in your own backyard. For Vancouver musicians 41st and Home, inspiration comes from everyday relationships, long drives and hours spent writing together in a small, car less garage somewhere on 41st avenue. Taking cues from contemporary DIY folk and indie rock, their songs are layered with rich instrumentation and narrative lyrics. You never know what you might come across at one of the bands shows. The stage is lined with bell kits, various percussion instruments and oddities such as the 1953 pump organ.
For your viewing and listening pleasure, 41st and Home’s video for “Hopes On a Boy”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYIp6kp2-yQ
Oh No! Yoko, are a quirky, keyboard-laden indie pop band from Abbotsford. A crowd-pleasing band, to be sure, with clever, and at times remarkably nonsensical, lyrics, they seem to revel in goofiness. The boys are completely earnest, however, in their love of music and are totally committed to making the most of their current good fortune. What the fans love about Oh No! Yoko is their wacky spirit and catchy harmonies—the music may even be secondary to onstage antics and online presence. This is a band very much focused on three guys having fun
Rounding out the evening are The Oh Wells, with their toe tapping, hand clapping pop folk tunes.
Saturday January 08
In Medias Res and Lakefield
Vancouver’s indie rock outfit In Medias Res have been putting out quality music for over 10 years, and now they celebrate the release of their new album It Was Warm And Sunny When We First Set Out.

Pernell Reichert Band, Joseph Blood and Sinead Sanders
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $6.00 at the door
A three-piece band from Vancouver, The Pernell Reichert Band’s music has been described as fast folk, alt folk, alt country, acid country, country punk, or cow punk. Using guitar, harmonica, electric slide guitar, vocals, bass and drums, the band’s live act features fast folky songs, foot stomping banjo songs and witty banter with the audience. Their songs reflect Pernell’s experiences on the road of life and on the highways of the world. His style of guitar playing has been described as high energy, fast finger picking numbers that keep the listener intrigued. When he is performing with his band the tempo is upbeat with a full thick sound, whether he is playing his acoustic, hollow bodied electric slide, or banjo.
Check them out live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fklkNUihzg
He’s been called the “Second coming of Gram Parsons” a “true renaissance man” and “one of the classiest musicians you’ll meet”. However you want to see him, Joseph Blood strives to entertain and expand his horizons at every turn on the road. “Hitting all the best parts of modern Americana” Blood’s songs are a blend of dark country, Celtic punk and chamber pop. His self-described “acid-country” has been winning him fans across North America and Europe as more and more people latch on to his urgent, captivating melodies and songs. He writes about living on the road, love found and lost and all the booze and heartache that fills up the cracks of life. And he certainly knows what he’s talking about.
Tuesday January 11
Jell, Cause4Drama and Strangefruit
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $5.00 at the door
Jell is an original rock band from Victoria with a sound that focuses on guitar-driven modern rock with catchy vocal hooks and clever insightful lyrics. Jell draws on a variety of influences like bands from Stone Temple Pilots, Oasis, Foo Fighters to The Doors and Metallica. Jell offers music fans a fresh new rock sound that fully entertains with original guitar riffs, poetic but to the point vocals, and an overall dramatic feel.
Rock out to Jell’s “Watch Yourself”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfuepOmiXR8
CAUSE4DRAMA is a rock band born from a group of young West Coast musicians who have been playing music professionally for over a decade. After a chance meeting at a benefit concert in 2006, CAUSE4DRAMA formed, employing vocals, guitar, harmonica, bass, and drums to create their own unique pop rock sound. Since their formation, they have brought their electrifying, high-energy shows to a growing number of fans. The chemistry between the band members is strikingly apparent the moment they hit the stage, immediately engaging their audience and leaving their mark on music fans in need of a fresh sound.
Wednesday January 12
The Biltmore presents:
The Canaries with All-Purpose Voltage Heroes and Supercassette
Doors at 8:00pm - Show at 9:30pm
Tickets $8.00 at the door
Forming in Vancouver in 2006, Canaries are known for their high octane live show where the three-piece constantly swap instruments, shout in each others’ faces and generally behave dangerously all the while powering through their very own version of noise rock. Think The Mae Shi crossed with Pulled Apart by Horses and you’re not far off.
All Purpose Voltage Heroes are a four-part keyboard rock troupe from Edmonton/Vancouver. The music they play is a mixture of dance rock frameworks, catchy pop hooks, screamy hardcore sections, and bad house breakdowns. It's the sound of boys who grew up on Nintendo sessions and punk shows. Cartoon marathons and kung-fu movies, Aqua and Converge. The live show is something to be reckoned with, they completely spaz out. They play fast, loud, and sloppy, stopping only to ask rhetorical questions. They'll bust a few dance moves, but will save the really good ones for the moment they ask for your hand in marriage.
Thursday January 13
The Biltmore & BeatRoute Magazine present:
Red Cedar with guests Adelaide & Lord Beginner
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $10.00 in advance at Zulu, Red Cat, Biltmore
Buy tickets online at: www.ticketweb.ca
Red Cedar (including part-time members of Yukon Blonde) was born out of five boys upending their previous strategies and forging a new path for themselves and their music. Coming from backgrounds of roots, country, psychedelic rock and the growing pains of too many noisy punk and metal bands these musicians were all too ready to strike out a new balance. With an ear for the loose arrangements of psychedelic rock and paying respect to the space and restraint found in the 60's and 70's songwriter movement, Red Cedar put an emphasis on poignant material that both grooves, ebbs and flows. They have an appreciation as much for the loudest moments as for the quietest.

Run with the Heard & Miami Device Sweatfest!
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $10.00 at the door
The first big party of the year is coming to the Bilty! So come on in and warm up during the 'coldest winter yet'. Should definitely be a few pants-off dance-offs!
Energy matched only by audiences, Run With The Heard dictates a consistent party atmosphere, which has them rapidly moving up the ranks of a promising Vancouver indie scene. Their sound ranges all the way from club-ready supercharged dance anthems – synthesizer infused rock ballads, to soulful down-tempo listening music, powerful and intelligent hip hop music, electro-acoustic folk and country, and just about anything you can think of. The dynamic contrast and perfect balance of so many genres, old and new, digital and organic, is a must-hear.
Shot live at the Biltmore, Run with the Heard’s “Wooden Clad”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIDmEduNcFE
Miami Device is a 10-piece Afro-beat/Funk band based out of Vancouver. Since their inception in 2007 the band has grown from a small four-piece funk experiment into the deep grooving, Fela Kuti inspired, boogiethon that exists today. With heavy driven horns atop syncopated guitars and layered percussion they produce a dance inducing, highly energetic live show. No two Miami Device shows are the same. The spontaneity and originality of each performance is what has kept audiences excited and wanting more.

Mezamazing, AK-747's and Beekeeper
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $7.00 at the door
Mezamazing is a rabid, cross-cultural stew of sonic hunger. Throughout their growth their philosophy has remained the same: no blueprints, no borders, no blinders, and an absolute dedication to catharsis, frenzy, and uncompromising joy-de-vivre. Consisting of a couple of acoustic guitars, a flute, saxophone, a trombone, accordion, percussion, vocals and a drum and cymbal unit, Mezamazing might be called a gypsy-esque jam band. It is a celebration of life's multicoloured paths- of positives, negatives and opposites, of comedies and tragedies touching glasses and sweating out uniformity- one show at a time. Come and join the celebration!
A small taste of Mezamazing live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmvEjivsICQ
The AK-747s are all about putting on a crazy show and having a good time. If you're looking for a band that sings about how their basement art show didn't turn out, wears their sisters’ pants, and bitches about the sound system on-stage while trying to look important, you’re out of luck. These guys are all about balls to the wall rock n’ roll!
Beekeeper is an indie post-pop band from Vancouver whose music blends together infectious hooks, stunning male/female harmonies, and unsettling math-rock dissonance. With electric guitar, drum kit, keyboard, voice boxes, violin, saxophone, and massive hearts, beekeeper fuses the more experimental elements of the Southern Ontario independent scene with an earnestness that is uniquely West coast.
Tuesday January 18
The Dyeing Merchants, Earlestown Winter and The Stolen Organ Family Band
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $5.00 at the door
The Dyeing Merchants is the brainchild of Calgary alumni Jzero Schuurman (Lucid 44, Jane Vain, Grandfather Fire, Gutterawl, Brittle Siren). The Dyeing Merchants was to be an extension of his solo project Psychic Pollution but with a full band, in time however TDM developed it's own sound. The music created has been very difficult to classify. The songs border on indie rock, but they also have folk experimental elements as well.
Vancouver folk-country artists Earlstown’s music plays much in the same vein of local group Eldorado with their brand of sweet-loving country music. Their songs are stripped back in terms of sound, but they don’t suffer for it. Singer-songwriter Jonathan Truefitt has such a unique voice that one must hear it to believe it, as nothing is really comparable. Not something that regularly comes out of the Vancouver scene, Earlstown Winter has an unpretentious, soft and thoroughly gentle sound. There is nothing abrasive or earth shattering here—just some very pretty music.

The Biltmore presents:
The Handsome Family
with guest Sean Rowe
Country/Folk husband and wife duo from Albuquerque New Mexico plays songs from their latest LP, Scattered: A Further Collection of Lost Demos, Orphaned Songs and Odd Covers

Handsome Family
“Brett and Rennie Sparks continue to put a brilliantly surreal twist on everyday subjects, using nature imagery to evoke the weird intensity of all-consuming passions.” --Spin
— The Handsome Family will bring their evocative, story-based folk to Biltmore Cabaret in Vancouver on January 19th. This date is a part of their West Coast tour supporting Scattered: A Further Collection of Lost Demos, Orphaned Songs and Odd Covers, a self-released album of covers, alternate takes, unreleased songs and bits of their history.
Fans of Rennie and Brett Sparks’ haunting and hauntingly beautiful stories in song will be delighted to know that they’re in for a double treat: The Handsome Family will be touring the west coast and they’ll have copies of Scattered with them. The CD is only available at tour dates and on their website, http://www.handsomefamily.com. The tour, which begins in Vancouver January 19thwill take them down the west coast to Santa Monica.
Scattered collects moments from The Handsome Family’s history and pre-history. A four-track demo of “One Way Up,” which appears on the album, was recorded in the Sparks’ tiny Chicago living room twenty years ago. Alternate takes, rehearsal tapes and orphaned songs keep company with covers the band has recorded for compilations over the years. “Little Buddy,” which Rennie describes as “one of our earliest attempts at songwriting,” was rescued from obscurity to be included. A cover of Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues,” was which was originally recorded for the Uncut Magazine compilation, Highway 61 Revisited Revisited as well as The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” recorded for Mojo’s Revolver Reloaded, are both included on the album. Covers of Leonard Cohen, Leon Payne and Harlan Howard also appear. There’s also traditional songs, like “The Lost Soul” of which Rennie says, “Hard to imagine, but they sang this terrifying song in church.”
The Handsome Family have toured extensively throughout the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, their live performances sometimes consist of up to a six-piece band and other times just Brett and Rennie. Despite the dark mood often created by their music, A Handsome Family show is fun, with Rennie bantering and telling more stories between songs, and Brett collapsing the illusion of tradition by sometimes using a laptop for drums.
The Handsome Family are known for Rennie’s evocative, descriptive lyrics, Brett’s deadpan baritone and their sparse, traditional bluegrass instrumentation. Their work has garnered praise from Pitchfork, Billboard, Spin, The BBC, Mojo and more. Their songs have been covered by many artists, most notably: Andrew Bird, Christy Moore, Cerys Matthews, The Sadies and Sally Timms.Honey Moon, the Sparks’ eighth studio album was released in 2009 to celebrate their 20th year of marriage.
Praise for The Handsome Family
“Though the Handsomes draw on Depression-era strains of folk music, Honey Moon is sensual and celebratory...May their musical honeymoon never end.” --Richard Gehr, O (Oprah) Magazine
“…these new songs are so full of woodsy imagery that they make Neko Case seem urbane." --Stephen Deusner, Pitchfork
“A mélange of classic-era Nashville, '50s Tin Pan Alley and doo-wop and Memphis soul balladry—is equally veiled, Brett warbling Rennie's pastoral lyrics about lingering kisses, lonely songbirds and reverse-anthropomorphism in an expressive baritone equal parts George Jones and Bing Crosby. Who are these people, you wonder? Though answers don't come easily, the process of getting to know them is fascinating nonetheless.” --Billboard
“As always the haunted lyrics bear a quaintness that seems so archaic you can almost hear the cogs whirring away inside." --Q Magazine
“We have a dozen songs of romantic yearning from deep within their own strange world…A place where love is measured by extremes…Modern romance but not as we know it.” --UNCUT
“Brett and Rennie Sparks continue to put a brilliantly surreal twist on everyday subjects, using nature imagery to evoke the weird intensity of all-consuming passions.” --Spin
“Peppered with jolts of danger and hints of regret, their dark-hued lyricism revels in the kind of mysterious, immersive intrigue that corkscrews its way through affairs of the heart when opposites attract and Cupid comes calling…There's a burnt beauty to Honey Moon – something akin to Mark Twain re-written by Edgar Allan Poe – that exerts a deliciously morbid pull on the imagination and the emotions. Satisfaction is guaranteed.” --Michael Quinn, BBC
“The album narrows the lyrical focus to a single topic—love—and downplays the murder ballads and apocalyptic imagery of earlier discs. Still, Rennie’s choice of romantic imagery is as genially warped and haunted as ever.” --Christopher Bahn, The Onion/A.V. Club

Lost Enterprises Year End Party/Rock Show
with Inventing The Dinosaur, No Other Way and Bucknife
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $10.00 at the door
Inventing the Dinosaur is a newer rock band from Vancouver. "The focus of this band is to make good, loud, noisy guitar music. We all got really into music in the 90's, so I guess that's an influence. We just make the music we want to make, there's no real sense to it."
Bucknife is 6 guys playing rock n' roll. With a definite lack of substance in the mainstream music industry, Bucknife set out to create something with a raw & intense feeling behind it. With songs that touch on the dirty & gritty side of life, there is nothing sugar coated about their sound or message. Priding themselves on being a "live band" Bucknife’s live show is full of energy & is not something you want to miss! Calling all outlaws, rebels & hell-raisers, this band is for you!
Originally from Ottawa, but now calling Vancouver home, No Other Way has performed with bands such as Alexisonfire, Death by Stereo and Protest the Hero, thus gaining them the experience needed to have a great live performance. Their songs include melodic vocals with sceamo tendencies, combined with fast paced punk rock instrumentals. Give in to the urge to headbang along to the double kicker; there is No Other Way.

Wovenhand
with guests Git Some (Alternative Tentacles)

Doors at 7:00pm - Show 8:15pm
Tickets $15.00 in advance at Zulu, Red Cat and the Biltmore (offsales counter)

Wovenhand, which began as a side project for David Eugene Edwards (Sixteen Horsepower), draws a little more expansively on folk tradition. On The Threshingfloor, the band's sixth studio album, you'll hear traces of Indian, Celtic, and Middle Eastern folk mixed in with the rock band setup and Anglo-Appalachian murder ballad templates. From the first measures of music, the taste of desert earth is on the lips; neck-hairs snap to attention as strange and unfamiliar sounds whisper just underneath the surge of guitar and the rumble of bass; clouds loom on the horizon promising either the balm of rain or the threat of judgment. The smell of horses’ breath, like ash, carries with it messages from another place, a place that is at once very, very far away and impossibly close... The music of Wovenhand is its own iconography, its own world, and its own universe.

Git Some is a punk band from Denver, CO that features members of Planes Mistaken for Stars and Kingdom of Magic. Delivering blistering live shows, including a mixture of melodic crooning and throat-taxing immediacy. The band’s rhythm section drags a multitude of genres- punk, post-punk, grunge, hardcore, stoner-rock- across a variety of odd time signatures, face-melting riffs and seismic shifts in song-structure. Regardless of who your favorite punk band is Git Some is better.

Hayley Sales with guests
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $10.00 at the door
In a day and age when many singers have their melodies and lyrics manufactured for them, Hayley Sales is the real deal. Providing a distaff version of the easygoing, sun-and-surf folk-rock of Jack Johnson or Ben Harper, Hayley Sales also rates comparison to more musically expansive alternative folkies like Erin McKeown and even Suzanne Vega. The music that Hayley is creating clearly resonates with a wide variety of audiences, whether via winning "Female Vocalist of the Year" at the Vancouver Island Music Awards or gaining standing ovations at Seattle's Northwest Folk Life festival. Sales' performances are inspiring and infectious; her mission to take audiences on a journey that moves from reggae dance party one minute to a meditative, thoughtful state the next.

The Biltmore & Psych DJ's present:
Psych Night at the Biltmore II
With The Dead Ghosts, White Umbrella & Northern Leadership (Brother Joe's band!) and DJ sets from the Psych DJ's, DJ Magnetic Ring & Brother Joe
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $7.00 at the door
Dead Ghosts are a four-piece garage rock and/or roll band from Vancouver. Raunchy lo-fi recording style, country-esque vibes, “sweet guitar pluck-and-jangle,” driving rhythms, and the occasional Back From The Grave feel is the basic make up of their songs. To get another idea of their sound, they’ve gotten comparisons to namely the bands the Black Lips and King Khan & BBQ Show. You may have seen them heating up the stage for Thee Oh Sees back in November at the Biltmore....
White Umbrella brings to mind both classic rockers like Led Zeppelin and contemporary bands like Tame Impala or the Black Keys, with their fuzzed-out, churning blues-rock. Jeremiah Klein’s reverb-drenched vocals float on top of often-distorted bass, crunchy guitar, and thunderous drums to great effect. Live, the band will seize your attention and then leave you begging for more.
Northern Leadership began in a southern Ontario town full of blues bars and factory workers. Call it improv, call it blues, jazz or art rock. Call it about variations on a theme; the early theme songs were by the likes of Lightnin’ Hopkins, Buddy Guy, and Eddie Hazel along with healthy doses of Rocket From the Tombs, Mudhoney and Metallica thrown in. Brother Joe’s guitar rages on 10 most of the time, the head down drummer is in another world losing it and the bass player is desperately holding it all together. No matter what happens, the music brings this band back together every week to rock n’ roll their asses off.

“The Pack A.D. sound like a jealous lovers' brawl - think White Stripes without the gimmick and with tighter drum fills. Black spits gritty lyrics and moans like she's spent her last dollar on cheap whiskey. The guitar-driven, aggressive rhythms move between desperation and seduction, and just when you start to settle into Black's smooth riffs, Miller's pounding kick pedal erupts with well-timed ferocity.” - Now Magazine
Known for their explosive live performances and the ability to generate a massive sound with only two members, The Pack A.D. plays garage rock/pop/punk/blues that is fierce, unapologetic, and loud as hell. They are an unassuming Vancouver duo who have reintroduced listeners to a blistering assault of scuffed, scarred bluesy riffs, pounding drums and unholy howls, Rock n’ Roll as it was meant to be played.
The Pack are fresh off a whirlwind fall tour that saw them travel across Canada, the US and Europe. They're most recent record “We Kill Computers” has been on or in the top 20 of the national Earshotcampus radio charts consistently since April of 2010. They hit the Studio with Jim Diamond (White Stripes) to begin work on their next Mint Records LP in February.
Sure to live up to it’s name, “Crazy” by The Pack a.d.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88h1zx3_R-4
Made up of ex-members of the New Town Animals and The Gung Hos, Thee Manipulators’ mission is to reinvigorate the ‘fun-dance-party' Garage/R&B scene that was born & prominent in the Pacific Northwest during the 60's - yet adding a bit o' energetic pop-punk into the mix as well. This will be a bittersweet night as one of Vancouver's most raucous and bad ass rock'n'rollers bids farewell.

Sealed With A Kiss presents:
Ra Ra Riot and Givers
**Early Show** - curfew 11:00pm
Doors at 8:00pm
Tickets $15.00 in advance at Zulu, Red Cat and Ticketmaster

Combining indie rock with chamber pop flourishes, Ra Ra Riot is a six-piece band hailing from Syracuse, NY. Coming together in early 2006, they create an eclectic sound that has allowed them to play alongside the likes of the Horrors, Bow Wow Wow and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. The groups spirited, sunny-side-up style shows will make the audience want to move in time with every pluck, pound, strum and bow.
Givers are a young quintet from Lafayette, Louisiana. Their music is packed with a sort of psychedelic buoyancy, homegrown exoticism (here, Afropop via the American South) and rattling optimism and joy. Sure to make you want to get up and dance, they’re one band not to miss.

...OKA consists of Stu Boga Fergie [aka: Didgeristu - nicknamed by his Yakin Andu elders] - the big man behind the beats, and raw didgeridoo rhythms and vocals, Chris Lane - on Slide Guitar and Woodwinds, including Bansuri (Indian Bamboo), Chinese Bamboo, Silver Flute and Soprano Sax, and OKAs newest member Charles Wall [aka: Zappa] - brings an energetic urban Pacific roots rhythm, with strobe like moving drum sticks, and his own unique hybrid drum setup, blending the traditional drum kit with native percussion and drums.
OKA is phatt organic earth rhythms in a smooth hi-fidelity sound that is full of uplifting melodies, tones and textures, all cooked over raw didgeridoo rhythms and dance driven grooves - a celebration of Australian cultures, sinking deep into the roots of the Asia Pacific region. As a live collective, no two gigs are the same, the OKA flavor is their own hybrid of feel good Roots, Reggae, Dub and Jazz, marinated in Electronica and served on Island Time.
They have independently sold over 60,000 albums worldwide, a true testament to their ever growing appeal to people of all ages and cultures. It's the kind of sound you spread the news about with an almost missionary fervor.
Jocelyn Demers
Jocelyn Demers started to play drums at the age of 14 for Jazz, Latino and Rock bands in Montréal. He loved to watch Big Band greats like Count Basie and Buddy Rich. Jocelyn's fiery passion for drums and ecstatic dancing improvisations turned naturally for a love for congas, bongos, jembes and doumbeks.
Traveling and playing in different countries became a new source of inspiration for Jocelyn in Madagascar (African fusion), La Martinique(zouk) and France (gitan-jazz). In western Canada he was the doumbec player for the world beat group The Moving Bears and participated in religions and poetic Islamic soirées. He is often seen at a drum circle on a beach in Vancouver entertaining a crowed of dancers and drummers for 5 or 6 hours.
