Event Description

The Vancouver Opera proudly presents Verdi's classic - Rigoletto - conceived and directed by esteemed stage director Glynis Leyshon. A hired assassin. A pious and vulnerable girl. A predatory duke. A father's curse. Terrible things are bound to happen in Verdi's masterful tragedy, set in a 16th century court.Rigoletto is a misshapen jester whose barbs enrage the courtiers and induce an ominous curse. Gilda is his adored daughter who becomes the innocent victim of their revenge. Seduced by the philandering Duke, Gilda sacrifices her life to save his. Rigoletto is left broken and alone. In Verdi's genius hands, the vicious clown with a hidden heart, and his exquisite daughter, both come vividly alive. The drama is dark and tender, the music is powerful and melodic. In Italian with English surtitles.
