“ I am always honoured when my contributions to the pursuit of the communication of Peace and Love through music are acknowledged like this – especially as it marks the beginning of a return to my national and international activities as a performer, composer, and educator of Canadian Concert Music.
The National Jazz Award has followed by days the release of all of my full time teaching commitments, and the excitement I have for the positive contributions I can offer to the wonderful world of sound has never been greater.
In addition to touring, recording and compositional opportunities being realizable with my new freedom, I am proud to say I have been chosen as Malaspina University/ Collage’s first Artist in Residence 7 week intensive to graduate the FIRST BACELOR of MUSIC JAZZ students on Vancouver Island this summer!!”
Hugh and his group will continue to celebrate his 2008 National Jazz Awards Trombonist of the Year honour after the Monday, April 21st Hermann’s date in Victoria in Nanaimo on Tuesday, the 22nd of April where they will direct the educational and performance activities with the hottest young Island Jazz musicians at Malaspina College.
This day long activity marks Nanaimo’s position as the Cultural Capital of Canada, and will culminate with Hugh’s 15 member Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation (VEJI) performing at the Port Theatre with a spectacular climax assured as over twenty select Island students join them!
