Event Description
Friday, February 8th, 2008 @ Sugar Nightclub Victoria is in for one of the biggest hip hop shows of 2008 when BLUE SCHOLARS come to the Island as a part of their first ever mini Canadian tour! They will be joined by Victoria favourites: GREENLAW AVE. & THE POCKET KINGS.Musically, the BLUE SCHOLARS come to entertain with exceptional writing and beats. While both members of the group are influenced by well known hip hop groups such as Tribe, Public Enemy, and Digable Planets there is so much more to be heard in their music. Sabzi and Geologic’s tastes range from anything danceable (with emphasis on jazz, funk, Latin, and soul) Artists like Thelonius Monk, Marvin Gaye to other contemporary Latin/hip hop artists such as Ozomati are present in the melodies and beats that accompany Geologic’s rhymes. Sabzi pushes the bounds with creating beats with an open mind to his music sources, unrestricting boundaries combined with a willingness to collaborate with almost anyone. As a former jazz pianist that attended tons of ska and punk shows he creates thick sweet-sounding beats that can be listened to in a quiet setting or thumped nice and loudly at a party or in the club.
Blue Scholars is as much rooted in the music as it is in working in the community. Their experiences as college students provide an intellectual dimension to their craft, while their backgrounds as second-generation sons of working-class immigrants keep the music grounded. Armed with a purpose beyond creating music for music's sake, Blue Scholars take the classic form of the emcee/DJ duo Gangstarr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Eric B. & Rakim while carrying the essence of militant, yet personal struggle shown by hip-hop luminaries such as Public Enemy and KRS-One.
Blue Scholars have been spreading their music (and its potent message) for just over five years impressing and inspiring their fans wherever they perform. They also succeed at getting others to listen that aren’t their fans but rather people that share in their experiences and beliefs. Whether the Blue Scholars are playing huge festivals and clubs alongside artists such as Kanye West, Immortal Techique or Mos Def or at political rallies and other community events in their own backyard, the Blue Scholars are determined to enlighten the masses and share their message their way!
Tickets available December 13, 2007 @ Complex, Lyle’s Place, Ditch Records and Ticketweb.com
