When Texas emo gods At the Drive-In split, two members formed The Mars Volta and the remaining three put together Sparta. Fans worried the offshoots would never make music approaching that of the original band. But with its 2002 debut Wiretap Scars, Sparta proved such fears unfounded. With a ferocious, precise rock sound, the group proved itself equal to the task of living up to At the Drive-In’s legacy. On its 2004 follow-up Porcelain, Sparta more than matched its debut, and delivered an album of tightly controlled post-hardcore recalling the reckless beauty of their former band. Threes, the El Paso group’s third disc, unleashes even more simmering adrenaline, ambitious arrangements, and biting melodies, while last year’s tour in support of the album galvanized fans and newbies alike.
Moneen’s aggressive, melodic pop comes wrapped up in songwriting sophistication and technical prowess. After forming from the ashes of the band Perfectly Normal in 1999 in Brampton, Moneen debuted with an EP and 2001's critically acclaimed full-length, The Theory Of Harmonial Value. By 2002, Moneen had caught the attention of one of today’s most influential and respected independent record companies, Vagrant (home to Dashboard Confessional, Rocket From The Crypt, Saves the Day, Paul Westerberg). The latest Moneen disc, The Red Tree, which follows the group’s breakout Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now? is a mature, diverse effort with songs epic in scope.
