DJ Dan
DJ Dan is synonymous with house music and for over 25 years, DJ Dan has been a pioneer and true legend, trailblazing his way with new methods and new beats, giving birth to what we call “House” or “Funky House” music, which fueled the underground rave scene in the Bay Area in the 1990ʻs. Those who have followed this musical innovator’s wide ranging career have seen him evolve from playing small clubs in Seattle and Los Angeles to playing worldwide in some of the world’s most illustrious venues. It is DJ Dan’s lifelong love of music that has driven his rise to success. From forming the Funky Tekno Tribe in the early ‘90s to being named one of the top twenty DJs in L.A. by LA Weekly, DJ Dan’s career is a study in melding house music’s sub-genres into one, heart-pounding sound dubbed West Coast House.
The beauty of DJ Dan’s body of work lies in his ability to bring fans of breakbeat, dub, techno, acid house, disco house, and funk together under one roof, moving to the same beat, feeling the same pulse with pure joy.
While he’s regarded a king in the club scene and one of house music’s innovators, DJ Dan’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed by mainstream artists including Depeche Mode, New Order, and Lady Gaga, all of whom tapped him for remixes. He’s also been recognized by nearly all of the genre’s leading publications including DJ Mag, which named DJ Dan as the #1 House DJ in 2006; Urb Magazine named him America’s Favorite DJ and America’s Hardest Working DJ; and he landed in the top ten in DJ Time’s America’s Best DJs. His set at EDC 2014 earned him recognition from DJOYBEAT.com and Magnetic Mag as one of the best sets of the weekend.
DJ Dan is perhaps best known for producing and playing incredible music, but he has an unparalleled eye for talent as well, signing some of house music’s most respected and widely renowned artists to his Los Angeles-based label Instereo Recordings. After releasing tracks with TJR, Phunk Investigation, Wolfgang Gartner, DJ PP, DJ Sneak, and Hatiras, Instereo Recordings became a force to reckon with, advancing DJ Dan to the highest peaks of club music fame. Along with his own label, DJ Dan has releases on Toolroom, Pacha Recordings, Ultra, Guesthouse Music, Work, XL Recordings, Magnetic, and Rising, to name a few.
But it’s the love of his peers and fans alike that keep DJ Dan creating and producing. This beat-matching master has collaborated with the world’s most talented dance music artists to create unique tracks with his trademark funk that brings crowds worldwide to the dance floor. From Carl Cox and DJ Sneak to Mike Balance, there is hardly a DJ in the industry who either isn’t clamoring to work with this global legend or hasn’t worked with him. In their own words:
