He sings through a 1930s-style telephone headset, creating a crackly intonation as if he's calling out destinations at a train station. He's lately realized a longterm goal and added a CB for his guitar microphone. "It gives it a nice, mid-rangey sound," Slim said. "It's a completely self-sustained unit now, where I don't have to use any equipment from the bar. It frees me up as far as moving around a little bit more."

* the set list leans heavily on Mississippi Fred McDowell and Big Joe Williams.

* has just one release - a self-titled 78 rpm album that came out in October 2001. The pressing was so limited - just 100 were issued - that even he doesn't own a copy.

* his most notable performance of late was a performance for his daughter's elementary school classroom. The students took to their feet immediately, cutting loose and forming an impromptu conga line.

"I really don't care if I'm in Maximum Rock N' Roll magazine," he said. "I like playing for good crowds that enjoy good music. I don't care which records they have in their collection at home. I like people that like music."
