About

Francois Carrier Trio

Celebrated as an expressive and
sharp-witted freebop player,
Quebec’s Francois Carrier plays
alto sax (and, more recently,
soprano) with an exultant joie de
vivre. For two decades this lyrical,
constantly creative artist has
been one of Canada’s premier
improvisers. Although a stylistic
descendant of Lee Konitz, Eric
Dolphy and Ornette Coleman (and
with more than a few nods to
Steve Lacy), Carrier puts his own
melodically inventive stamp on
everything he does, from pure
improv to structured originals. A
Juno award-winner with an
extensive discography, Carrier has
a fearless approach to jazz that
always sees him jumping into the
deep end, whether he’s playing
with Dewey Redman and Michel
Donato (Open Spaces) or carving
out a unique take on the West
meets East omni-jazz scene with
sitar star Uwe Neumann (Happening).
Carrier will be performing
with his trio which consists of
Michel Lambert drums and Jean-
Jacques Avenel acoustic bass.
“. . . an original voice from the
post-Coltrane continuum, a
disciplined but creative force.” –
