About

Radio Berlin

A new wave type band from Vancouver. I guess we sound a little like old Cure, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, 4AD, with some modern hardcore influences. A 7" and 12" coming out on olympia's Fragil Records (www.fragilrecords.com), a split 7" w/Kid Commando (Sweden) on Australia's Project Icarus, and a CD with the 7" and 12" on Vancouver's Love Und Romance Records (run by two people at Zulu Records).

===================

Radio Berlin is a four piece band from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Having been around since 1998, the band has toured around North America several times and have released numerous, critically-acclaimed albums (1999s SIBLING and 2001s THE SELECTION DRONE). With a sound best described as rhythmic postpunk/new wave with early 'goth' stylings, Radio Berlin's garnered many welcome comparisons to bands like Pornography-era Cure, Joy Division, Wire, Josef K, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, only backed by the rhythm section one would expect from a band like Clikatat Ikatowi. Having played with peers such as of The Locust, I Am Spoonbender, The Faint, Vue, Add N To X, Interpol, Ted Leo, and Camera Obscura, Radio Berlin rocks out with a hypnotic live show. Radio Berlin released the LP/CD "Sibling" (LP: REASSEMBLAGE/CD: LOVEUNDROMANCE), a 7" on REASSEMBLAGE and a split 7" with Kid Commando on RADIO ONE, are gaining recognition worldwide.

The release of their second full length record THE SELECTION DRONE, recorded at The Hive by Colin Stewart, was released September 2001, on ACHE RECORDS (LP) and YOUR BEST GUESS RECORDS (CD). The record received some amazing reviews from the music press and made it at as several publications best album of the year. Radio Berlin toured the album in the fall of 2001, playing with such bands as Ted Leo/Pharmacists, Femme Fatale, The Rockateens, Semi-automatic and a host of others, receiving a great response around North America.

Upon returning to Vancouver, Radio Berlin's keyboardist of three and a half years, Warren Hill, left the band to persue studies at Concordia University in Montreal. Lyndsay Sung, a local musician and friend of the band, joined on board with the band at the start of writing their 3rd official album.

Radio Berlin, being a band that has always emphasized that the strength of a band lies in the quality of composition and recording of it's songs, have remained low from public profile in 2002 due to other band activity (see footnote at bottom of the bio) and the terminal band relationship with Joshua Wells. The band has recorded 9 tracks in the rough mix stages right now which will be released as the GLASS LP/CD on ACTION DRIVER (www.actiondriver.com). This album is by far the bands most strongest and notable material yet and is certain to make waves in the music world. Recorded by their preferred engineer at The Hive, IZ Tech, and world renowned The Factory studios, the sounds and songs on this recording are absolutely mind-blowing. ACTION DRIVER will also be re-releasing SIBLING LP/CD, THE SELECTION DRONE CD, and the 1999 7 in summer 2003.

The band is currently charging up again, planning extensive touring in the latter half of 2003 and 2004 and re-configuring the band with their new drummer Rob Zgaljic (formerly of SPARKMARKER and Sub Pops THE BLACK HALOS) and writing new material with Chris Frey moving to guitar and Lyndsay Sung to bass/keyboards. The new configuration finds the band incorporating some more noise-rock and guitar interplay into the band's unique formula. The band will be recording this new line up and its material in May 2003 for a 7 on ACHE RECORDS.
