About

Jason Moran Trio

Universally hailed by the critics as an authentic new voice in jazz, 27-year-old Jason Moran is an unnervingly talented pianist/ composer who has a confident familiarity with everyone from James P. Johnson to Cecil Taylor, and an ability to acknowledge his funky roots while exploring the complex rhythmic and harmonic structures of music most modern. “I bring new ideas to old things,” is Moran’s modest take on things, but it’s clear to his many fans that this long-time student and colleague of luminaries such as Jaki Byard and Greg Osby brings a Thelonius Monk-like individualism to his intricate and thoughtful musical endeavours. Moran has four volcanic Blue Note CDs to his credit, and even though his recent solo album, Modernistic, made a big splash, Moran is most alive when sparking off his with longtime bandmates, Tarus Mateen bass and Nasheet Waits drums. “It’s impossible not to view Moran as one of the most striking originals to emerge in jazz in years.” - JazzTimes
