Heartwood Studio

Studio Hours: Open 10-5 most days, year-round. Please phone or email ahead to ensure we'll be home. Ken is a self-taught woodturner who began his craft as a hobby while working as a Conservation Officer on southern Vancouver Island. Once retired, he began working with wood full-time, salvaging Cowichan Valley trees downed by the wind or felled for safety reasons. He uses mostly Maple (for its interesting figure and colour) and Arbutus (for its hardness and durability) but also enjoys working with fruitwoods and softwood burls. Ken's main goal in turning wood is to present the beauty of the wood in a useable form. His specialty is salad bowls and servers, with a supporting cast of other creations such as cutting boards, kitchen utensils, small bowls, platters, lidded containers including urns, live-edge bowls and vessels, and whatever else piques his creativity and is supported by his customers. Designs are simple and practical. His work sells well because it is attractive, functional and reasonably priced. Wood finishes are food-friendly walnut oil and beeswax. Ken's "Heartwood Studio" is located 5 minutes west of Duncan off Gibbins Road. A map can be found on our websit... more...
