About
The Dirtmitts
Formed around the nucleus of singer/guitarist Natasha Thirsk and bassist Jennifer Deon, THE DIRTMITTS started to take their musical career seriously in 1997. Life-long music fans before meeting, Natasha started playing the piano and writing her own songs at a very early age, while Jennifer always had a special place in her heart for a great song with a strong hook. Once they were introduced they knew they had to start a band together. The summer of 2001 saw their dreams legitimized with the release of The Dirtmitts on Sonic Unyon Records. The twelve-song effort won the hearts of indie rockers and critics worldwide. Shortly after its? release, the quartet did a cross-Canada tour culminating with a much lauded NXNE showcase at Toronto's El Mocambo and a standing room only show at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern with label-mates Sianspheric.
Their impact at home in Vancouver earned them a nomination for Georgia Straight?s Best Band of 2001 award and 'In The Meantime' and 'Fix Destroy' from The Dirtmitts were used on episodes of the hit Fox television series 24, on the NBC teen series Just Deal and in the incidental music of the movie American Psycho 2.
After their Canadian tour, the band also completed two Western US swings before heading overseas. In February 2002 they became the first Sonic Unyon roster band to tour the UK. They did a short, but sweet, tour that saw them mentioned in Time Out as 'pick of the night' for their London show at the Notting Hill Arts Club. Upon returning from the UK, the band headed straight into the studio to record their follow-up album Get On.
Recorded at Burnaby, BC's Greenhouse Studios (Nickelback, Matt Good) and mixed at Vancouver's infamous Warehouse Studio (R.E.M., AC/DC, Slayer), Get On was tracked and mixed in three weeks by former Matthew Good Band guitarist Dave Genn and his production partner Tridon. The two used to play music together in the legendary Vancouver rock combo DSK and have recently produced albums by other notable Vancouver bands such as The Pepper Sands and Honeysuckle Serontina.
THE DIRTMITTS have shared stages across North America with bands such as Modest Mouse, X-Girl, American Analog Set, Her Space Holiday, Mathew Good Band, 54.40, Brassy, Idlewild, the Nasty On, the Gossip, High Rise and labelmates Chore, Sianspheric and Tristan Psionic. Look for the band on tour again this October and November across Canada and the Northern US.
