Primarily inspired by Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti, NOMO started up several years ago and as they matured more of their own ideas percolated through all those throbbing Afro-Pop beats and elaborate horn charts. Their two most recent albums – Ghost Rock and Invisible Cities – reveal a band that has embraced a strong feeling for rock and jazz, for tight structure and glorious disorder. With a few nods to the dirty cooking jazz jams of Charles Mingus and Sun Ra, these six musicians create catchily melodic tunes as much as killer grooves and big beats.
